What is Going to Happen to the Milk?

Three months pass between the death of Old Major and the actual animal revolt. What were some of the animals doing as they waited? How do their actions foreshadow the possibility that things may not play out as equitably as Old Major had hoped?

  1. Some of the animals, such as the pigs, were learning how to read and write. Since they were now educated, the pigs now had a dominance over the other animals in the farm. Other animals, like Mollie, were continuing their faith to the “Master” by asking insecure questions about the revolt or asking questions that would only benefit their self. The actions of the animals, while waiting for the rebellion, foreshadowed the inequality in the future because I sense that the pigs will begin to manipulate the other animals so that the pigs can reap the benefits of the work of others. On page 45 the first page of chapter 3, it said “The pigs did not actually do work, but directed and supervised the others.” Which already has signs that the pigs feel superior to a point where they can determine everything that goes on by only their voice and not by any physical work.

  2. In that time some of the animals were preparing for the rebellion. Going over and repeating what major had said, and making plans. Some asked questions and others defended mr.jones. This foreshadows that things may not turn out as equitably as planned because if thier personalaties are gonna cause ideas to clash then everyone will begin to look out for only themselves. The equality and united group will no longer be there. If they don't work together the plans won't work at all.

  3. As the animals waited for the revolt, they arranged meetings and made "animalism" which is the animals' beliefs and set of rules/regulations. They also sung the song "Beasts of England" together, which united them and got them all excited for the rebellion. As they were learning parts of the song, it was evident that each animal had a different learning pace than the other, which can pose as a threat and foreshadow the possibility that things are not equal nor will they ever be.

  4. As the animals waited for the revolt they held secret meetings at night to discuss what was taking place. The pigs; Snowball, Napoleon and Squealer, taught themselves how to read and write and therefore became the leaders of the animals basically. The also developed a system called Animalism. These actions made by the pigs alone show that not all the animals are going to be equal which is what Old Major wanted all along, he wanted the animals to be equal. With Snowball, Napoleon and Squealer knowing how to read and write they are not the same as the other animals.

  5. While many animals were continuing on some of the animals were holding secret meetings several nights a week led by the pigs. Along with the secret meetings the pigs, alone, took it upon themselves to learn to read and write while they waited for the revolt to begin. The actions of the pigs foreshadows the possibility of inequality between the animals. Already the pigs have set themselves one level higher than the rest of the animals by learning to read and write while the other animals know nothing of it.

  6. The pigs, during the anticipated wait for the revolt, design all of old Major's thoughts into what they called Animalism. All the animals held secret meetings while Mr. Jones was asleep that explained what Animalism is and what it means. Although with much troubleshooting, every individual animal was able to receive their own specific duty which would help towards the cause of Animalism and the rebellion. But animals begin to disagree with each other, creating controversy towards Animalism and the big plan. Old Major simply wanted a society where animals could roam free and get along, but it seems as if the animals will soon be fighting themselves and the humans.

  7. After Old Major’s death, and before the actual animal revolt, the animals of the Manor Farm were involved in different parts of making Old Major’s wish come true. The three pigs, Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer elaborated the concept of Animalism. They held secret meetings and taught this system to all the other animals. The rest of the animals listened, some had questions and the pigs made sure they answered them making Animalism seem ok. Other animals were no more than faithful disciples such as Boxer and Clover. These actions foreshadow that the animals will not be equal under their new society. The pigs will have control and they will try to manipulate others by using their cleverness and ability to speak. Others, such as the horses, will follow them no matter what.

  8. As they waited for the rebellion some of the animals lost faith and developed alternative philosophies. On pg. 36 it was said that some asked questions like “if the rebellion is to happen anyway, what difference does it make whether we work for it or not.” The raven for example spoke of a mythical place called sugar candy mountain. That all animals go there when they died. Other signs of the unrest to come were evident in Mollie who was only interested in herself and how she looked in ribbons. These were contrary to the views of animalism which stated that all materialistic things belong to the nature of man and all four legged animals were to separate themselves from it.

  9. Over the three months the three pigs had taught themselves to read and write. This foreshadows possible inequality among the Animal farm because the pigs had learned before any of the other animals. If the society was truly equal the pigs would have educated themselves with the other animals, however, they did not. By learning to read and write ahead of time the pigs could possibly be planning to use their new abilities to manipulate the other farm animals.

  10. Elizabeth Romero.
As the animals waited for the revolt they came up with the new Philosophy of Animalism, they also began to hold meetings and converse about the new regulations within the new group of Animals. For example Mollie the horse was no longer permitted to wear ribbons because it was a symbol of slavery. The animals began to change their ways to honor the Animalism clan, for example Boxer no longer wore his hat that helped him when he was working to prove his loyalty and dedication to the animals. Most importantly were the pigs planning for the animal’s and the barn’s future. This indeed foreshadows that the pigs having the advantage of intelligence, are going to eventually gain control and power over the animals in the barn.
